Kris Allen goes shirtless while enjoying the water rides at the Atlantis Resort & Casino in the Bahamas on Sunday afternoon (April 18).

The 24-year-old American Idol champ was seen soaking in the sun on the lazy river, sharing a double tube with wife Katy. Kris also spent some quality time with his bandmate Cale and younger brother, Daniel (pictured below in blue swimming trunks), who is a college cheerleading coach.

Yesterday, Kris performed a 45-minute concert in the ballroom at the Atlantis. He recently signed a deal with the Universal Music Publishing Group (they will distribute his music worldwide).

The destruction in Haiti has dropped out of the news since February. But one unlikely source came to Washington to remind lawmakers to keep Haiti in their memories--recent "American Idol" winner Kris Allen.

Allen traveled with the U.N. Foundation to Haiti in February for 10 hours, where he handed out food and sang for women and children. He shared his experience with "American Idol" fans during the special "Idol Gives Back" program, for which he hosted a D.C. watch party at the Hard Rock Café.

"It was devastating. I've been to a lot of different places, but I've never seen destruction like that before," Allen told Whispers over dinner at Neyla restaurant in Georgetown on Wednesday. "There are no houses. That's the only picture in my mind that I have of Haiti--a bunch of rubble."

Haiti is not his only humanitarian mission. Allen also traveled to Rwanda to hand out free pairs of Toms Shoes. He even wore one pair to the dinner, which followed a whirlwind tour of D.C. for the singer. Earlier that day, Allen visited Washington's School Without Walls, a magnet school for gifted students, where he led a music class and talked about his travels. Then, he headed over to Capitol Hill, where he met with several Arkansas congressmen to remind them to keep Haiti on their priority list. Vic Snyder, Marion Berry, Mark Pryor, and John Boozman were among the lawmakers he spoke with. "I have seen their faces around Arkansas my whole life," said Allen.

"Not that these guys are going to forget about it, but it has fallen off in popularity," he said. "We want to make sure it's fresh in their minds."

Didi Benami waited on Kris!

American Idol contestant Didi Benami has reportedly revealed that she once waited on last season's winner Kris Allen.

The 23-year-old singer, who exited the Fox competition last week, told OK that she met Allen after his win when he dined at a restaurant she was working in as a waitress.

"His family came in before and they were really really sweet. I remembered them because they were so nice, and then I went over to the table and he looked so familiar," she explained.

"I was like, 'Aren't you the guy who won American Idol?' He was like, 'Yeah'. So I told him that I was about to go audition for American Idol. He asked what I was going to sing, I said 'Hey Jude'."

Benami went on to say that Allen's advice had been, 'Just be yourself', and that the singer had remembered her when he visited the Idol set to discuss his charity trip to Haiti last month.

"He was like, 'Oh my gosh! I just put two and two together'. But his wife [Katy] apparently came into the restaurant and asked for me again," she added. "They were so sweet."

Also surprising this week is that Kris Allen managed to also sell more singles despite his song "Live Like We're Dying" getting less play on the radio. The reigning "Idol" champ sold 46,000 copies of the song in the past week, putting his total at an even 1.2 million.

Kris Allen will appear on "American Idol" next week to help raise money for Haiti, it was announced Wednesday (February 17). Last year's "Idol" winner has partnered with the United Nations Foundation to take a trip to the earthquake-ravaged country, and he will share footage from his visit and perform on the February 25 results show.

Allen will head to Haiti on February 19 to meet with U.N. staff and Haitian people to find out what the country will need to recover in the coming months. Fox told The Associated Press that viewers will be asked to make donations online or by text-messaging during the "Idol" episode, with the money going to the Idol Gives Back Foundation to help support the U.N. Foundation's work in Haiti.

"I'm looking forward to traveling to Haiti to see the U.N.'s work firsthand," Allen said in a statement. "The people of Haiti are rebuilding their country, and the U.N. is there to help them every step of the way. I look forward to sharing the images and stories from my trip with 'Idol' viewers across the country."

The appearance is part of the show's "Idol Gives Back" charity effort, with the full "Idol Gives Back" episode airing April 21. The charity show took a break last season due to the pressure of producing that show along with the finale. "Idol" judge Randy Jackson suggested that this year's "Idol Gives Back" might benefit Haiti, and it looks like that is part of the plan.

What does it take to be an Idol? If reigning American Idol Kris Allen's advice is anything to go by, the secret is pretty simple. "I think playing an instrument helps."

Sound advice as he handled quite a few instruments during his performances on the show including the acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard and the piano.

"But if you can’t do that, obviously eyeliner helps — but not for me," he laughs, in an apparent reference to his Idol runner-up Adam Lambert.

His deadpan sense of humour is refreshing. In an interview some time before his showcase at the Gardens Hotel last week, Kris did seem rather aloof, but it's forgivable seeing the strenuous schedule he has been put through since being crowned in the world’s most popular talent show.

In the 15-minute session, he only warmed up almost at the end of the conversation. In fact, this writer had been warned moments before meeting Allen.

Colleagues from other media who had faced him, came out disappointed, what with his monosyllabic answers.

And then there were warnings to steer away from questions related to Lambert. Which was hard, considering that while the flashy glam rocker may have played second fiddle to Allen at the finale, he has kept up with the champion like a shadow ever since, in terms of success.

It was too tempting to see if the Jackson, Arkansas all-American boy would flinch at the mention of Lambert's name just one more time.

And so, we asked if the gay Lambert being 'outed' in some implicating photographs helped 2010 his win in Idol.

"I knew," he said in reference to Lambert's sexual preference. But did middle America's 'discovery' of Lambert's penchant for boas and such help him?

"I mean… people… I guess…," he trails off, taking time to organise his thoughts.

"How could you have not known?" he says with a wry smile, shrugging.

Still, whether it helped or not, it wasn't smooth sailing for Allen. He didn't get much attention throughout the competition, and it was only much later in the Top 11 when Simon Cowell praised him for his interpretation of To Make You Feel My Love noting that the shy lad actually had a shot at the Idol title.

Plus, not to mention, no married individual had seriously posed enough threat to ever take the Idol title prior to Allen's win.

"Everyone knew I wasn't single. It was hard… I had hoped that people watching the show would vote on talent, but I know it's not completely what people consider when they're voting.

"They're thinking, can I hang out with this guy? And whether he's likeable."

However, Allen admits that his clean boy-next-door image, coupled with his loving husband role helped, as did his religious background.

"I think I'm a relatable guy. I'm a little bit weird to some people... but I think it does play a part."

Perhaps, Allen's reluctance to go more in depth during interviews is also partly due to the media's tendency to focus on fluff and trivial matters.

After countless interviews, one of the most asked questions is how much has his life changed post Idol. Even in the Press conference prior to the interview, Allen was asked those exact words by a member of the Malaysian Press.

"I can only answer that I'm in Malaysia," he says, shrugging off the obvious.

Allen may come off misunderstood to some, appearing bored at mundane queries but the folksy rocker is a serious artiste who appears to be coming into his own.

While others may jump for joy at an offer to release an album within months of winning Idol, Allen realised that there was much to do.

"Making an album, there are things that I would want." And while he says he feels "pretty good at how the album turned out," it was clear that it has not met his own personal expectations.

So much so, that even the 'coronation tune', No Boundaries, co-written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, did not make it into his debut — breaking away from Idol tradition.

"Well, I just felt there were better stuff to put on the album.

"The studio version is on iTunes, if people wanted they could get it there but I feel that it has run its course."

While staying away from reading album reviews, Allen is aware that he has yet to find his sound.

The critics have been quick to point out his albums lacks maturity and direction as opposed to Lambert's debut.

And that doesn't even include the updated comparisons on the sales of their respective albums. The comparisons don't irk him, especially when he avoids reading reviews, but Allen finds the whole scenario amusing.

"It's not disturbing, but it's funny that people would even try comparing him to me.

"It doesn't make sense at all because he does his thing and I do my thing and it has worked for both of us."

As for lack of direction — he admits that writing and producing is hard.

"And to come off the show and go straight into that kind of thing…" he said.

"For the second album, I want to write all the songs and I definitely want to spend more time in production. Ask anybody how you can make an album in four short months.

"I want to spend months and months sitting down by myself and write songs and really perfect a lot of stuff."

Allen hints at a shift in his music, and it should come as no surprise if he pulls a Kelly (former Idol Kelly Clarkson), who changed her sound after her debut upon being given more creative freedom.

So how different will Kris Allen be in the future?

"I don't know how different. For me maybe a little bit more raw, emotionally heavy."

Still, despite the pop machinery at work, Allen is thankful for it all. He says he is clueless as to what he would have done without Idol, not having industry connections and having exhausted his avenues playing small bars.

"I'm just glad it all worked out. The first person I worked with was with David Hodges and he had worked with a lot of big names like Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry and come off after being part of Evanescence.

"I got a little intimidated with the Grammys and all he had in his home."

Hodges has also written and/or produced for artistes such as Amie Miriello, David Archuleta, Anastacia, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys as well as Dashboard Confessional amongst many others.

And he's also in the writing credits for Lambert’s upcoming album, of course.

As for his album, Allen says that the inclusion of the cover of Heartless is the last time he includes reworked tunes.

Despite his many enjoyable interpretations of big tunes in the show, there is almost no chance of any of them making it to future studio albums.

"Can't imagine that I would (include reworked tunes). All the songs I did on the show, I really loved, definitely suited a live show. But I really can't imagine I would record them cause it's already been done.”

Meanwhile, Allen's continuing his tour around the world for his fans, discovering and 'enjoying' new things like the 'balut' (a fertilised duck or chicken egg with a near developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten with the shell).

Or maybe not. "I'd rather just eat a hard boiled egg," he smirks.

NEW YORK — The "American Idol" stars aligned Friday night (February 12), as Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen took the stage for an exclusive live event.

Ryan Seacrest's "Rock My Town" concert brought out hundreds of lucky ticket winners, all of whom braved the cold for hours to make sure they got the best possible spot in the intimate Highline Ballroom.

Performing in the order in which they were eliminated during the eighth season of "Idol," fiery-haired Allison Iraheta rocked out first in a dizzying set that showed off her raspy pipes and her criminally overlooked pop/rock songs.

Iraheta — in two punky pigtails and a black-and-white rocker-chic dress — and her enthusiastic four-piece band ripped through fan favorites like "Holiday," single "Friday I'll Be Over U," show-opener "Don't Waste the Pretty" and "Robot Love" with plucky aplomb. (The latter song even featured Iraheta busting out a quick robot dance move, much to the delight of the audience, made up of teenagers, their parents and a host of baby boomers with glitter face-paint, presumably there for Mr. Lambert.)

Iraheta's set hit a few bumpy patches — including some technical hiccups with a bum mic — but she made up for it with her rough-around-the-edges, self-deprecating charm. After flubbing a few lines in the title track from her album, "Just Like You," she offered a silly mea culpa to the adoring crowd. "I'm sorry for being an idiot. Let's see if I can get this next one right." (She did. "Trouble Is," an achingly tender ballad, was a set highlight.)

Later, on another ballad, "Scars," Iraheta stopped her band when she realized she began in the wrong key. During take two, Allison changed the lyrics to "Don't turn away, I won't go off key this time." All was forgiven by her set closer, a stompy fuzz-rock cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" that was so strong, it's easy to imagine Iraheta making it to last year's finale had she had the chance to sing it on "Idol." It's a shame Allison's self-confidence was on the fritz as she exited. "Sorry about sucking tonight," she sighed. (For the record, she did not suck.)

Self-confidence wasn't a problem for Adam Lambert, who sported more glam and glitter in his hair than all of Las Vegas combined. During the explosive 11-song set, he owned the stage with his blend of raw sexuality, campy theatrics and, most importantly, vocal agility. Lambert effortlessly glided through octave-jumping, voice-testing songs like "Music Again," "Strut" and the heart-stopping ballad "Soaked," originally a Muse demo.

Adam easily whipped the crowd into a frenzy with his Mick Jagger-meets-Alice Cooper-meets-Elvis Presley presence, but Lambert quickly stopped his set as soon as he noticed a fan in front had passed out from all the excitement. Once the situation had been resolved and the sick woman got some water, Adam suggested she take a seat away from the stage. "You can rock out from back there," he politely suggested, before busting out "Sure Fire Winners," which appropriately features the line "Give 'em something to pass out about."

Any "Idol" fans who expected Lambert to put out an album of hard-rock songs should start saving their cash for when Adam goes on tour later this year. Songs like "If I Had You," "For Your Entertainment" and the Lady Gaga-penned "Fever," which each have a dance/pop vibe on his RCA/ 19 Recordings debut, were given a rough, badass makeover thanks to his backing band.

Lambert and his crew were just as effective on quieter tunes too. Current single "Whataya Want From Me" and the Ryan Tedder collaboration "Sleepwalker" were both high points for the passionate singer.

But it was the one-two punch of his last two songs that really kicked the set to new heights. First, Lambert busted out the rare bonus track "Down the Rabbit Hole," and even though not everyone knew the song, Adam had the entire crowd in the palm of his spiky-gloved hands thanks to his electrifying performance, complete with knee-falling, ear-monitor tossing and plenty of cozying up to his bassist, TommyJoe Ratliff (who your parents probably remember as the dude Lambert kissed on the American Music Awards). "I got a little carried away," he meekly said.

Lambert then busted out his iconic cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," and the crowd erupted. It was a genius set-ender. Not only did it allow for his talented band to get some arena-ready rock solos, but the risqué lyrics let Adam act out as much as he wanted. His rock-and-roll antics included giving the microphone stand some affection, smearing makeup all over his face, shouting "come on, bitches!" into the crowd, licking the lens of a fan's digital camera and letting a group of grab-happy audience members get up close and personal.

As the glitter settled and the road crew began setting up for Allen's performance, a sizeable group of Lambert fans made a beeline for the door, an odd and unfortunate gesture considering the amount of "Idol" fans who were shut out from winning tickets and love all the performers.

Those who stayed were treated to a surprisingly loud Allen set. It smartly kicked off with his much-lauded cover of Kanye West's "Heartless," which has now evolved into a mash-up with the Coolio oldie "Gangsta's Paradise."

Later on, he played another ditty that earned him raves on "Idol," the Swell Season's "Falling Slowly," except now Allen adds a few measures of U2's "With or Without You" into the mix, making the song feel even more sweeping and emotional. So much so, in fact, that Glen Hansard stole Kris' unique arrangement for a Swell Season show earlier this week, a tidbit Kris was eager to share with the crowd. (Allen also played his Michael Jackson week offering "Man in the Mirror" but left it untouched, presumably out of respect for MJ, whom Kris called "one of the greatest ever.")

Allen's been on the road the most out of the three on the bill, and it has paid off handsomely. His bandmembers sound like they have been playing together for years, and his stage presence has improved tremendously since his days on "Idol." He no longer looks awkward when he performs without a guitar. In fact, "Can't Stay Away," "Written All Over My Face" and his cover of the the Beatles' "Come Together" all showed off a newfound — dare I say it? — rock-star swagger that delighted the Kris fans bopping in the audience (even if nobody passed out, as Kris jokingly said was his goal for the night).

Even more exciting was when Allen and his band opened up the arrangements to his album songs. "Red Guitar" and "Is It Over" both approached jam-band territory at certain points, giving the 12-song set a dynamic ebb and flow.

The crowd cheered the loudest for Allen's single "Live Like We're Dying" (and least for the sore thumb of the night, the Pat Monahan-penned ballad "The Truth"), but the highlight was the infectious sing-along "Alright With Me." Kris grabbed five fans out of the front of the audience to help sing backup. (A sixth "straggler" joined them.) As he helped one girl up, she suffered from "pants on the ground" syndrome, giving the crowd a nice view of her underwear. Allen, being a Southern gentleman, blushed as he stammered, "Oh gosh! Don't ... don't look." (It's also important to note that Kris neglected to choose the ballsy fan who had thrown an Adam Lambert T-shirt at him earlier.)

Moments after Kris left the stage saying "Kradison thanks you," Allen's band returned for an encore, except this time they brought Lambert's guitarist Monte Pittman with them. The crowd buzzed. Could it be? Would fans be treated to a one-of-a-kind collaboration?

Turns out, yes. Kris, Allison and Adam all traded verses on an electric cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," in an epic collaboration that played like a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam session: "Idol" edition. As Kris mentioned earlier in the night, "They're my family, dude," and that familial bond was on full display. While wailing into their mics, Adam picked up Allison, Allison draped herself on Kris, and Kris and Adam sang to each other while frenzied fans in the crowd desperately tried to keep up with their camera phones. When it all ended, the audience was in full flail mode.

If only those early exiters knew what they were missing.

American Idol winner Kris Allen wowed the crowd of about 800 people with his guitar and folksy style here.

The reality show’s eighth season victor’s showcase included his hit song Live Like We’re Dying.

Allen said he considered being able to perform in Malaysia a “blessing”.

A year and a half ago, I was in my small apartment, not really doing anything. Who would have thought that I’d end up here?” said the soft-spoken singer, whose self-titled post-Idol album has sold about 245,000 copies to date.

He added that he preferred not not to seek publicity but focus on his music.

“(Being low-key) is the way I am. I’d rather hang out with my wife or go out to dinner (than attend red-carpet events),” he told a press preview here yesterday.

This is the first time a winner of the hit reality show has performed in Malaysia. Season seven runner-up David Archuleta held a concert here last year.

Fans who had received special invitations by participating in contests organised by Astro and Hitz.fm joined the showcase crowd at a hotel.

Arkansas-born Allen, 24, greeted his audience at a meet-and-greet session after the show, where he posed for pictures and signed autographs.

He also appeared at the Mid Valley Megamall before his showcase, where die-hard fans had been gathering since morning to be one of the 200 to receive his autograph.

Having flown to Kuala Lumpur after doing two shows in the Philippines, Allen’s next stop will be Singapore.

Kris Allen's self-titled debut album dropped at No. 11 on The Billboard 200 album sales chart after selling only 80,000 copies during its initial week of release, according to Nielsen Soundscan data for the week ending November 22.

80,000 copies, which is great news! And his single Live Like We're Dying continues to rise on the Billboard Hot 100 and also makes it big in Singapore. It seems that it's received over 100 plays in Singapore over the past week!

Kris Talks about Live Like We're Dying!

NEW YORK — "American Idol" winner Kris Allen had a morning of firsts. He not only had the world premiere of his new single, "Live Like We're Dying," at New York radio station Z100, but it was also the first time he'd ever heard one of his songs on the radio.

"It was really cool. You dream of this day, you dream of having a single out and having it on the radio, so this was a cool day," he told radio DJ Elvis Duran and the Z100 morning-show team.

The strummy, sing-songy tune had apparently been earmarked as a single for Kris since he began working on his post-"Idol" album back in May. Allen told MTV News, "[The song] was actually one that we had listened to really early on, and we kind of just fell in love with it. Everyone did."

A cover of a barely released track by Irish pop rockers the Script, "Live Like We're Dying" joins the tradition of "life wisdom" songs that urge the listener to live each moment as if it were their last. Think of it as a less schmaltzy version of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" or a more dude-friendly twist on Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten." Incidentally, Bedingfield's smash was co-written and produced by the same duo who worked with Allen on this track: Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner. The positive message is merely one reason Allen was drawn to the song. Responding to one specific lyric, "So if your life flashed before you / What would you wish you would have done?," Kris admitted that if he were suddenly on his way out, there's a big regret in his life. "I wish I would have skydived. It's random, but I have always wanted to," Allen said. "I'm really scared to, but I think that it would be the biggest rush."

While album details are still hard to come by from the tight-lipped "Idol" champ, Allen admitted that "Live Like We're Dying" is just one of many songs on his still-in-the-works CD with producers Frampton and Kipner. "We got a couple different producers on the album, but there's a couple songs that [Frampton and Kipner have produced]. And I'm actually going to London to work with them again."

Should Allen score any free time in England, the Beatles fanatic hopes to hit up Abbey Road to take in some mop-top history. "I hope I get the time. I will totally [take a pic of me crossing Abbey Road]."

Kris Allen's still-untitled major-label debut will be available everywhere November 17. "Live Like We're Dying" will hit iTunes on September 29.

Since Kris Allen's surprise victory on "American Idol," the laid-back 24-year-old singer-songwriter from Conway, Ark., has been working nonstop, moving back and forth from the "American Idols Live" tour to working on his debut album.

"It's tough," says Allen, calling from a tour stop in Washington, D.C. "It's almost like you have to switch your brain over to the other side. It's a whole different animal. Touring is a whole different mind-set from recording."

Is touring what you thought it would be?

It's probably a little more work than I thought it would be, but other than that, the traveling is great. We're having a blast.

Can you talk about who you're working with on the album and what it will sound like?

I think I'm going to keep that under wraps for now. We are working hard with some artists, some pretty big writers in L.A. and we're getting in some songs as well. We've got some pretty good stuff so far. . . . I would say it's in the pop-rock genre - that genre is huge, but somewhere in there, with something a little bit different that I think people will like.

There was some controversy about you not singing "No Boundaries" in the set anymore. What happened?

We had it in there and the tour director came up to me with some other people and were like, "What if we put something a little bit more energetic in place of it?" I was like, "OK, let's see what we've got," and I came up with the idea of doing the Killers' song "All These Things That I've Done" and we just kind of ran with it. It was kind of a boost in my set.

So how do you feel about the song [co-written by "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi?

Um, no comment. I think it's a really good song.

Have you had any surprises on the tour?

I think the fans are a little bit crazier than I thought they were going to be. They like to touch you and sometimes in ways that maybe they shouldn't . . . but those people buy records, too.

Kris Allen, one of the more low-key "American Idol" winners, is wearing his crown lightly. The 24-year-old Arkansas native still seems a bit surprised by his win over the flamboyant Adam Lambert, whom the judges and many others considered to be a shoo-in for the title.

"I don't know if (being the winner) is ever going to sink in - it's not that I can't quite believe it, it's that I'm not getting any special attention, which I prefer," says Allen, who performs 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Boardwalk Hall.

Allen will be sharing the stage with Lambert and the members of the show's Top 10 for what has become an annual rite of summer: the "American Idols" tour.

For the live show, each contestant performs a mini-set. Allen, who has signed a deal with 19 Recordings/Jive Records, gets the privilege of being the closing act.

He plans to sing several of his most popular tracks from "Idol," including his acoustic version of the Kanye West track, "Heartless," as well as a personal favorite, The Beatles' "Hey Jude."

Allen, who will be making his first appearance in Atlantic City, recently talked to At The Shore about the turning point in the TV competition, his unlikely friendship with his rival Lambert and his career role model.

Q: What was your strategy to win the crown, or did you just take it week-by-week?

A: There were some things I wanted to do to set myself apart. I think the "Heartless" thing set me apart - that was a real eye-opener.

Q: Did you feel any extra pressure to stand out, given all the attention Adam Lambert received from the media and judges?

A: For me, the only person that put pressure on me was myself. No one was going to put any pressure on me - I put a lot of pressure on myself. People saying that Adam was amazing - I was like, "You know what, he is amazing" - there was no pressure caused by that.

Q: Much has been made of your friendship with Lambert, given your identifying as a Christian and his coming out as gay. Do you see it as an unlikely bond?

A: I don't see why it would be unlikely. I think we're all people. Just because he doesn't believe in what I believe in doesn't make us not alike. We've become really good friends - people are people. We're going to be friends, no matter what.

Q: Which part of your "Idol" experience really stands out?

A: One of the best experiences I had was singing with Adam when Brian May (from Queen) was playing guitar. That was one of my favorite moments. Singing ("We Are the Champions") up there with your friend and a legend - that was pretty cool.

Q: What do you have planned for your album?

A: I'm pretty sure we can get out enough stuff so that 100 percent is not from the show. I've done a lot of writing sessions - it's going really well. We're getting into the swing of things and pumping out some songs. I think the sound will be pop-rock and definitely will have an organic vibe, as well.

Q: Is there a release date?

A: We're all going to try to get our records out before Thankgiving - me, Adam and Allison (Iraheta).

Q: How do you envision your career shaking out?

A: I don't know - someone like John Mayer, who's been through three different phases of his career - he did the acoustic pop thing and everyone loved that. Then he came out with the trio thing and everyone loved that. And then he came out with the bluesy album - someone like him, who I feel his music has gotten better throughout his time in the music industry - that would be great.

American Idol winner Kris Allen has revealed that he feels like an outsider in the pop genre.
The 24-year-old singer, who triumphed on the Fox reality show in May, admitted that his acoustic style doesn't fit in with the current dominance of electro music.
Speaking to the Charlotte Observer, Allen commented: "I feel like pop music is definitely not going my way!"
Asked if he was referring to the popularity of artists like Lady GaGa, he replied: "Yeah, you know what I'm saying? I'm not gonna get up there and do, like, an electrobeat kind of song. But hopefully people can appreciate what I do as well.
"I just think that it was nice that [the show this year] wasn't all about how good you can sing. It was about what kind of recording artist you're going to be, and how well you're going to do in that respect."
Allen added that he will be happy with his status in the industry for as long as he is able to perform gigs.
He said: "Whether you're as big as someone like Lady GaGa, or whether your CD doesn't do amazingly, but you're still playing gigs and making music - at least we were given the opportunity."

Most “American Idol” winners so far have fallen in the “humbly likable” category. Think Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks.

Exceptions: powerhouse R&B diva Fantasia from season three and authoritatively confident rocker David Cook from last season. (They were both likable in different ways, just not evidently humble by my definition of humble.)

This year’s winner Kris Allen joins the majority as Mr. Understated, not Mr. Swagger. And he proved no different during a phone interview earlier this month to promote Friday’s sold-out Gwinnett Arena “Idols Live” concert.

Q: So far, reviews have been good for the tour so far. Have you had time to read any of them?

A: I just read some stuff last night. I figured it there’s a place to read reviews, it’d be the L.A. show. It was all good. Everybody got good reviews.

Q: You’ve done eight shows so far. How’s it been going so far?

A: It’s been going good, man. We’re getting used to it. We’re able to relax a little bit and have fun with it.

Q: Is it intimidating to follow [runner-up] Adam [Lambert] and his big rock show?

A: It’s not intimidating. Like on the show, we’re completely different artists.

Q: I know you and Adam are good friends but there has been some tension among your fans.

A: Maybe there has been some. There have been some run ins. But for the most part, they get along.

Q: You sang the coronation song “No Boundaries” the first few dates but have switched to a Killers song. ["All These Things I've Done"] What happened?

A: It was a collective thing with the producers. After the first show, the director came up and said he felt like the energy took kind of a downfall [when he sang “No Boundaries”] We needed to pick things up so we switched out that tune. So far, it’s been going amazingly well.

Q: A lot of people hate that song. I’m sure even if you did, you wouldn’t be in a position to say anything.

A: [Chuckle.] I would never say that. [He has told other media he still likes the song.]

Q: An MTV reviewer was impressed how well you were able to sing that really deep bass part of the Killers song, something we never heard on the show. Why were you holdling out on us, Kris?

A: I don’t know! I mean, “American Idol,” you have to be singing as high as you. That’s how the show goes.

Q: Why are you closing with “Hey Jude”?

A: That’s an easy one. Once they told me I could do it, I decided to close with it. It’s such an anthem. I don’t care how old you are. You know that song. [That song was sung during the season six tour, too.]
Q: When “Idol” reached the top 13, nobody really expected you to win. It was all about Danny [Gokey] and Adam. Do you think being the dark horse helpd you?

A: Yah. America is so ADD. They push one thing, then they get tired of it. I’m not saying that happened. [It's clear he added that disclaimer so we wouldn't immediately think, "Danny!" even if we did...] For me, that’s kind of the way I roll anyways. I’m pretty low key. If you like me, you do, if you don’t, that’s fine. I hope people like me. I’m not trying to please everyone. It wasn’t about me trying to be showy. Really. I didn’t pick my self to win. I didn’t even pick myself to be in the top 12!

Q: What can we expect from your album?

A: It will be a pop-rock mix. I don’t know if it’s a particular genre. It’s going to be something hopefully people will be a little surprised, a good surprise.

Q: I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother passing.

A: It’s okay. It’s always hard to lose someone. It was hard to lose my grandma. It was really hard on my mom. I’m glad I was there for her to be there with her. My grandma was in the hospital for the past month. She had diabetes. She had surgery and they thought she’d be fine. But she had heart problems.

Q: She did get to see you win “American Idol.”

A: That was very cool. We went to her house and while we were going through stuff, we found this huge notebook of all the “American Idol” stuff she had clipped out of the newspaper. It was sweet.

Q: Have you been to Atlanta before?

A: I’ve done a lot of travelling, just not in the States. So no.

Q: Unfortunately, the way the tour is set up, your stop in Duluth won’t really count, will it?

A: It’s more like a drive by. That’s kind of the bad part about it. Hopefully, I’ll have more time later on.

No tabloid-ready rivalry, no behind-the-scenes sniping and recrimination, no senseless drama — in short, Season 8 of "American Idol” was nicer than nice. And this year’s champion, Kris Allen, couldn’t be happier.

"I think a lot of people have seen that, and that’s where I think this year was kind of cool: No one was just trying to go out there and beat the other person,” said Allen, who performs with his fellow finalists in "American Idols Live” at 7 tonight at Tulsa’s BOK Center. "They were just trying to do their best. If you won, you won, and if you didn’t, hopefully cool things would happen for you.”

For this year’s Top 10 finalists — Allen, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Joy, Michael Sarver and Scott MacIntyre — "American Idols Live” is the first of those cool things. The concert is a victory lap, a chance for the singers to connect directly with their fans and play favorite songs from the show.

Allen, a 24-year-old Little Rock, Ark., singer-songwriter, went all the way with his organic-acoustic interpretations of songs such as Kanye West’s "Heartless” and Bill Withers’ "Ain’t No Sunshine.” In the final round, the soft-spoken and understated Allen went up against Adam Lambert, a fiery performer who was at his best doing Led Zeppelin and Queen songs.

The softer approach won out, with Allen beating Lambert by fewer than a million votes, but Allen said he’s not quite ready to be put in a box. He said "American Idol” offered him the opportunity to show his stylistic range.

"Yeah, I think a lot of people put me in that ‘singer-songwriter’ genre, but I don’t see myself strictly in that,” Allen said. "I guess I’m kind of versatile, and being on the show opened me up to that. I don’t know if I ever surprised myself, but some of the stuff that comes out is surprising.”

Allen always fared best when putting his own spin on unexpected covers, such as his earthy acoustic version of Donna Summer’s "She Works Hard for the Money.” That range earned Allen some unusual post-"Idol” performing opportunities: He sang "Get Ready” with Motown legend Smokey Robinson at the annual Walmart shareholders meeting on June 5, and two days later he delivered the national anthem during the NBA finals.

Now, Allen is preparing his first post-"Idol” disc — his first album, "Brand New Shoes,” was recorded and released in 2007. He is reportedly working with former Evanescence keyboardist David Hodges and Joe King of The Fray on material for the album, due this fall. But for now, his primary focus is on "American Idols Live.”

Following the Tulsa performance tonight, Allen will play Saturday at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock — his home turf. Allen said he isn’t planning any special songs for his homecoming, but he knows that his Arkansas date will be a standout on the tour.

"I think more than anything, it will just have an energy about it that will feel special,” he said.

Kris Allen would love to work with rapper Kanye West. The winner of "American Idol" season eight opens up the matter to Extra in response to Kanye congratulating him over his victory in Idol.

"Thank you for liking the song, Kanye," Kris says when being informed that Kanye loves his "Heartless" performance in one of the Idol episodes. "Thank you for writing the song, The whole CD is amazing." He continues, "Hopefully we can work together. That'd be great. Thanks for the congrats. I appreciate it."

Kris Allen performed Kanye West's "Heartless" twice. He showcased his rendition of Kanye's hit single for the first time during Idol Top 3 episode. Then, he sang it once again in "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", which has been aired on May 26.

After invading the Ellen DeGeneres-hosted talk show, Kris paid "Live with Regis and Kelly" a visit on May 26. During the show, he performed the Idol winning song "No Boundaries", which was also delivered in front of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" viewers.

Kris Allen Says 'No Boundaries' Just 'Didn't Work' In 'Idol' Set

LOS ANGELES — Turns out there is a boundary for "American Idol" winner Kris Allen after all.
Less than two months after releasing victory single "No Boundaries," Kris Allen has already dropped the song from his American Idols Live! tour set list and replaced it with The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done."
But the amiable acoustic rocker insists the switch has nothing to do with his feelings on the song — which remain positive — but rather chalks it up to musical flow.
During the Los Angeles Tour Stop on Thursday, Allen told MTV News, "We were talking to the tour director and stuff, and it kinda just didn't work with the set."
Early tour reports from critics and fans pointed to the Kara DioGuardi-penned "No Boundaries" as "sticking out" on Allen's five-song set list, which also included his well-received covers of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," Kanye West's "Heartless" and the Beatles classic "Hey Jude."
Allen first replaced "No Boundaries" with the Killers anthem at the Sacramento, California, tour stop and immediately noticed a big difference in audience reaction. "Obviously, adding the Killers song was a, you know, boost in the energy," Allen said.
Kris Allen fans outside the Staples Center were elated with Allen's performance Thursday night, particularly because there were no boundaries, mountains or hurricanes mentioned anywhere onstage. One Allen fan, Tatiana, gushed, "Thankfully, there wasn't any 'Boundaries'!" Another fan, Barbara, emphatically echoed, "It's better he didn't do it. He was great!"
The sentimental (and often schmaltzy) coronation song has long been a bone of contention for "Idol" die-hards. Last year's single, "Time of My Life," was renamed "Magic Rainbow" by David Cook fans thanks to one specific lyric. And two years later, Jordin Sparks' "This Is My Now" is still a go-to punch line for "Idol" bloggers like Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak. Allen dropping "No Boundaries" is the first instance, however, of an "Idol" winner distancing him- or herself from the single during the tour.
In addition to the American Idols Live! shows, Allen is hard at work on his major-label debut. (In June, Kris confirmed to MTV News that he's in the process of co-writing a song with the Fray's Joe King.) There's no word yet on whether this set-list switcheroo indicates that "No Boundaries" will be noticeably absent from his album when it hits stores in the fall.

Cutting "No Boundaries" from the American Idol tour was a no-brainer for Kris Allen

"Taking that out is kind of helping my set a little bit," Allen explained to us this morning as he and Adam Lambert up their new Ford vehicles at Galpin Ford just outside of Los Angeles. "It gave it a little but more energy…It just felt like a better fit to put something else in."

Critics and fans have pretty much trashed "No Boundaries," which DioGuardi cowrote, ever since it debuted as the American Idol victory song during the finale in May. Allen has replaced it with The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done."

"Everyone knows that song," Lambert said. "It's really great."

Our favorite singing bromancers also talked about which Idol alums they'd like to work with...

"I love Kelly Clarkson," Allen said. "She's incredible, so that's who I'd want to work with."

Lambert is a big fan, too. "The album Kelly just came out with is fantastic," he said. "Great writers, great producers. She wrote a bunch of songs on there, and Katy Perry —my girl—wrote songs on there, too. It's great."

But then Lambert added, "I want to work with Fantasia, just hollerin' back and forth."

On a more serious not, the openly gay Lambert said he's trying not to think too much about protesters who showed up at one of the recent Idol tour stops. "I don't think I'm going to change their minds," he said. "I respect their opinion, but they didn't need to come to a concert and spread negativity...Go use your energy for something productive."

American Idol champ Kris Allen canceled his Wednesday night appearance on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien because of his maternal grandmother's death.

Taking Allen's place on the late-night talker will be Idol pal Allison Iraheta, performing "Barracuda."

"I know I was supposed to do Conan ... but there was a death in my family," Allen said on Twitter "But everyone watch [Allison]. She is filling in. And by filling in, I mean [she] is gonna rock Conan's face off."

Iraheta responded to Allen's messages by saying on Twitter "Love ya man. Keep yo head up."

Allen, Iraheta and Season 8's other Top 12 finalists are currently on the road with the American Idols Live Tour. Allen's rep told Access Hollywood that he is not expected to miss any dates, and will return to the tour in time for the July 16 stop at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Kris Allen: Record will have urban elements!

As the most recent winner of "American Idol," Kris Allen isn't just expected to record a debut album -- he's supposed to make chart-topping hits and live up to the sales of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and David Cook before him.

For his fall debut on 19/Jive, the 23-year-old has a wealth of songwriters and producers to choose from: David Hodges (Clarkson, Daughtry), Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Akon, Leona Lewis) have all submitted material for the record. Allen also collaborated with Joe King of the Fray in June at Timbaland's Virginia Beach, Virginia, recording studio.

"Each writing session has been a learning experience," says Allen, who adds that his record will sound similar to John Mayer and Jason Mraz, with possible traces of the urban sound that he's been exploring with some collaborators. "I think that we are trying to figure it out and that it's going the right way, and I'm really excited about it. I can't wait."

My recorder decided to eat my recording of my conversation with Anoop Desai and Kris Allen, but I'll try to reconstruct it the best I can from memory and sparse notes:

Desert island artists: Kris says The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Queen.

We talked a bit about the influence of Michael Jackson on pop music overall, and on Kris in particular. "Who didn't?" he asked when I recounted a story about his habit of dancing and singing Jackson songs as a boy.

I asked Kris about his rendition of the song "Falling Slowly" that he did during movie week. He said he'd seen the movie and really loved the song and thought it would work. Anoop chimed in that he hadn't heard it until Kris sang it on the show -- and was subsequently blown away.
Looking forward to hearing Kris' take on "Hey Jude" tonight at the show.

Goth kids, soccer moms and diehard Idol junkies — including one superfan with Clay Aiken’s autograph tattooed on her shoulder — packed Portland, Oregon’s Rose Garden last night for the inaugural performance of American Idol’s summer tour.
The two biggest stars of the show — winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert — embraced what endeared them to millions of fans throughout Season Eight. “Glambert” was out in full force, with tight pants, his otherworldly wail and a tribute to the original rock androgyne, David Bowie. Wrapped in a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans, Allen kept it simple and real, embracing the stripped-down soul sound that elevated him from dark horse to worthy champion.

An adorable montage of Allen’s baby pictures, plus David Cook’s new video and a few airborne beach balls, kept the audience entertained as Idol No. 10 Michael Sarver prepared to take the stage. Backed by a small band with a big sound, the full-voiced Texan kicked off the show in high spirits with Gavin DeGraw’s “I’m in Love with a Girl,” which he dedicated to his wife, Tiffany. Megan Joy took the stage for two numbers — and lots of shimmying — reprising one of her best Idol performances, “Put Your Records On.” Piano man Scott MacIntyre left his pink pants at home but his rendition of Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” — and his gentle mocking of Ryan Seacrest’s attempt to high-five him at the auditions — drew some of the loudest applause of the night.

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen To Hit The Road For 'American Idol' Tour

In a little more than a week, the top 10 finalists will hit 50 cities for the American Idols Live! tour, starting in Portland, Oregon, on July 5. With the pressure turned up now that they're in the final days of rehearsals, the Idols are dishing about what you'll see from them when they hit the road together this summer.

MTV News caught up with everyone in the top 10, including Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta, in Los Angeles as they prepared for the tour. "This tour's going to be so awesome," Iraheta said. "There's definitely going to be some stuff that we've done before on the show and also some new stuff."

Allen, this year's winner, also shared his excitement to hit the road, saying that each finalist will bring a different vibe to their sets. "I feel like it's going to be 10 little shows," he said, "with 10 really talented people. It's going to be incredible."

The one person who definitely brought theatrics to the Idol stage week after week, Adam Lambert, promised the drama will be turned up when the tour starts. Lambert revealed that his outfits will include "studs, rivets and spikes."

"I'm really excited to do the songs that people fell in love with on the show, but then also to bring some new stuff to the table," he said. "I'm actually going to be performing a David Bowie medley at the end of my set, and we're bringing a lot more of an electronic element in to that, make it very 2009."

it's just so sad that they won't be coming to Singapore.

For the next three months or so, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen will be spending a lot of time with each other as they crisscross the country on the American Idol tour.

It's no wonder that the two say we shouldn't be surprised if, in the end, they decide to record a song together.

"It could happen," Lambert told me Friday during my exclusive sit-down with him and Allen. "Maybe we'll write a song on the road."

Allen smiled, "We have to figure it out, but yeah, we should do it."

No surprise that the American Idol winner and runner-up have become as tight as any two best friends could be. So just how close are they?

They both laugh when I ask Allen if Lambert is his "closest gay."

"As much time as we spend together, I would probably say so," Allen said.

And it works both ways. "He's definitely becoming my closest straight," Lambert said. "That's something I am trying to get across—that it doesn't frickin' matter. Just like when people were dealing with race relations. The moment we started getting over it as a society was the moment we stopped paying attention to the differences and paid attention to the similarities."

He continued, "People get so scared and uncomfortable with the ways in which they are different. I think it's a testament to Kris that he's completely comfortable in his own skin, comfortable with his sexuality. He's a straight man, he's married and it's not threatening for him to be friends with a gay guy."

Or, as the more reserved Allen put it, "That's what's wrong with the world. Why can't everyone just get along?"

As talkative as Lambert is, he remains pretty much tight-lipped on matters of the heart.

"I do not have a boyfriend," he said when I ask about the much speculated relationship he has with interior designer and artist Drake LaBry. "I know everybody wants to know, but that is the one area that I kind of want to keep out of the press: my personal love life, especially out of respect to the other person."

But then, a few minutes later, Lambert looked at me and said, "OK, let me set the record straight with you on the boyfriend thing—Yes, Drake and I are dating. You can say that."

Now back to show business. Is Lambert itching to get back to acting like he did in his pre-Idol theater days?

Not exactly.

"I think I'm a little bit over it because I spent so much time as a kid in theater," he said. "I had my love affair with musical theater and now I'm like, 'Give me something edgier, give me something a little grittier, a little bit sexier and not so safe.'"

Allen, on the other hand, wants absolutely nothing to do with acting. "I don't think so, man," he said. "I don't think anyone would ask me to. I did those Ford commercials and it was hell."

The “American Idols Live Tour” is set to kick off on July 5 in Portland, Ore., bringing Season 8’s top 10 on a 50-city tour – and “Idol” winner Kris Allen said he’s loving the ride.

“It’s nonstop but I’d rather be doing this than anything else,” Kris told People. “Four months ago, I could have never imagined ever doing anything like this… It feels great!”

Of his forthcoming album, he said it won’t be what people expect.

“I actually do think people are going to be surprised, but in a good way, hopefully,” Kris said.

I just sat down with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. While we chatted about many things, I could not help but first ask them about Michael Jackson.

In fact, on Monday, Fox will reair this year's Jackson-themed performance night, when Allen sang "Remember the Time," and Lambert belted out "Black or White."

The first album Allen ever owned was Jackson's Dangerous from 1991…

"He was the most influential musical person that I had in my life," Allen said. "On the artist side of things, everything that he did was just so right."

He continued, "Every album that he did, it hit you in a way that just made you feel good. It made you feel him and feel his music. He was a genius, a complete genius."

Lambert remembered listening to 1982's Thriller.

"His voice was just one of a kind," he said. "No one else sounds like him. Furthermore, the visual stuff he brought to the table was so groundbreaking and edgy and ahead of its time, in a way. There wasn't anyone else really going out there like that."

Lambert added that the King of Pop broke barriers. "He defied sexuality and race in a way that no one else has," he said. "He wasn't openly masculine or feminine. He was kind of somewhere in the middle in this androgynous space and at some point he was like, 'Black or white, it doesn't matter.' There were a lot of things he straddled the line of, and I think that was really cool."

Kris Allen: Adam Lambert Isn't 'Stealing My Thunder'

American Idol Kris Allen has had a totally different post- Idol experience than runner-up Adam Lambert, managing to stay out of the limelight and off the cover of Rolling Stone.

Allen insists he has nothing but love for Lambert, but he'd rather focus on his music and finally get a shot at married life with childhood sweetheart, Katy.

Getting back to business with the Top 10 tour.
"It has been really nice. We've been crazy busy, all of us. It's nice just to hang out with everyone and see everyone. It's going to be a fun tour and it's just fun to work and do what we've wanted to do in the first place."

Penning his first song.
"I was in my first year of college, and I wrote a song called 'The Real World' and it was horrible! But you live and you learn. The thing that inspires me the most [when I write] is stuff that is happening in my life at that time. Whether it be the good, the bad, whatever. It's just about different people, friends, family and my wife."

Serenading the ladies on campus.
"I've been with my wife for seven years, so I didn't do that. But I was known as the guitar guy."

Will we hear a husband-wife duet in the future?
"She is not a singer and she will be the first to tell you that. She does not like to sing where people can hear!"

Bringing his faith into this mix.
"I want to make music that appeals to everyone. [Christianity] is a part of me, so that will come out. But for me, I don't feel like I want to come out with a Christian record or anything like that. But if you're making music that's about you, then that's going to come out a little bit."

Adam Lambert commending him on his open-mindedness.
"Me and Adam are really good friends. I learned from going to different countries and seeing different people that you can't have a one-track mind about anything. There are so many unanswered questions. I'm never going to rule out anything so you have to have an open mind and it's just about getting along with people and just having fun while we're on Earth."

Finally settling into married life.
"It's nothing normal. It's more like the craziest boyfriend-girlfriend situation right now. It doesn't feel too much like we're married just because it's a completely different married life than we've expected, but it's still really good. We've learned that you gotta take things a little bit differently being like this. [if it wasn't for Idol] it would probably be just me and my wife sitting and having a comfortable life, and that would have been fine too. But it happened to work out this way."

Finding a balance.
"There's definitely been people that I've hung out with that have been doing it for a while and understand how to balance the married life and this kind of stuff. There's people that do it well and people that I look up to."

Kris Allen Works With Joe King of The Fray for Debut Album

Here are some updates on Kris' future album..

While his fellow "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert gets helping hands from RedOne for his post-Idol album, Kris Allen has The Fray's guitarist Joe King on his team for his debut effort. "I'm literally in the studio mixing the rough demo right now," Joe told MTV during a phone interview. "It doesn't have a title yet. It doesn't even have lyrics - but there is a lot of gibberish."

Explaining further about how the recording process is going on so far, Joe said, "It was a very good vibe in the studio." He added, "There was no pressure - we just had breakfast, got to know each other. It was all very organic after that."

Kris and Joe craft the new song in Timbaland's studio. Unfortunately, the powerhouse producer is not present during the session. "But Timbaland's brother was there along with his crew, and it added this great energy to the session. When the boys heard the track, they started hanging around," Joe shared. "Timbaland's brother said if Timbaland was upstairs and he heard this melody, he'd walk in the studio and say, 'That's a melody'."

Aside from hitting the studio with Joe King, Kris will also work with acclaimed producers Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon). Kris plans to drop the record this fall under 19 Recordings/Jive Records.

In related news, Kris Allen is currently rehearsing for the upcoming Idol Summer Tour which will be kicked off on July 5. "The energy is going to be better on tour," Allen said. "No one's judging you."

Adam Lambert, who verified the on-going rumors that he is gay in his Rolling Stone cover story, made no attempt to hide the fact that he has crush on Kris Allen. He told the print media, "I was like, 'Oh, s***, they put me with the cute guy. Distracting! Here's a great interview from Entertainment Weekly with Kris on "side-mouth singing, lip-synching, and calling Danny a 'jerk'".

You know what's great about the Internets? They are infinite! See, I wrote this article on Kris Allen for the current issue of Entertainment Weekly and had the pleasure of spending a good chunk of Memorial Day with him in New York City. We roamed around Central Park, where he got a kick out of visiting the John Lennon "Imagine" memorial; we hit Rockefeller Center, where a woman not only asked for a photo but requested that he take off his shades in said photo (he obliged); and we rode the subway (F train, direction downtown, in case you care) because he'd never been on one before. (Twas also his first ever trip to the Big Apple.) Problem is, here's only so much I could fit into two pages of the magazine. So I hereby offer you some of he morsels that did not make it into the magazine story. (It's the first of a new PopWatch series we're calling "Bonus Points.") Behold, your Idol sounding off everything from calling Danny Gokey a "jerk" to Christians rejecting Adam Lambert. Enjoy!
On the Idols having to lip-synch for many of the early group performances.
That whole lip-synch thing, we were so upset about it. They were like, "It's hard to blend the 10 voices" or whatever. After a while, we complained enough and Adam's pretty good at taking a stand. We'd be like, "Yeah, Adam! Go, Adam!" He would always lead the pack. He was the first one to be bold and say something [to the producers].
On his (let's admit it, pretty darn adorable) habit of jutting his jaw to the side when hittin' the big notes.
My friends and my wife make fun of me for it all the time. That's [one of] the reasons I can't watch my performances, 'cause I see that and I'm like, "Oh gosh. Don't do that." I don't even know why, it's just a thing. I hate it. But…I've always done it. I've done it forever. I've tried to change it. It just won't happen. It's just emotion—my mouth happens to go to the side. I thought it was so funny when we did the results show and Anoop made fun of me. That was hilarious. They were like, "Is that okay?" And I was like, "Totally! I don't care. It's funny!"
On speculation that he and Adam Lambert painted their nails as a campaign to get a Kradam finale. (i.e. at the exclusion of Danny Gokey)That's not what we were saying. This is what we were saying: There was this tabloid thing that came out about me and Adam, about how we don't get along because I'm this conservative kid from Arkansas and he's this L.A. liberal guy. Which, I could be nothing less than conservative. I'm just from Arkansas. And they were like, "He's cranky because he misses his wife and Adam's nail polish is all over the place and they can't get along." And we were like, "That's so stupid. That's the stupidest thing." We just didn't want people to think that we didn't get along. Because we're really great, great friends.
On calling Gokey a "jerk" on Larry King Live last Friday, in response to Gokey saying he had picked Allen to win.
That was a joke. Seriously, we're all really good friends and we joke around with each other so much. It just came out. He's like my brother as well. We've become so close. We're around each other so much, we just joke around a lot. I hope people didn't read it differently. I'm sure the Danny haters will. [Slips into a mean, angry voice] "Kris hates Danny!" It's so weird that everyone hangs on to every word you say. But I'm not gonna change. I'm not gonna not joke around with Danny Gokey.
On the PR department schooling the Idols on what they can and can't say on the air.
After Allison Iraheta joked about not cutting herself… Oh gosh. All the PR people were like, "Oh gosh. Oh, Allison don't say that on TV!" There's a couple things that we don't say. She doesn't say "cut myself." I said "retard" one time. When I was talking about myself, I said, "I felt like a retard." Never say that again! And then, I don't say "benches" because it sounds like "bitches." [Allen's slight twang does transform the word into something like "binches," which is dangerously close to "bitches"] I don't say that anymore… until now! I'm sittin' on these binches! [Laughs]
On his frustration with Christians who wouldn't accept Adam Lambert.
There [were all these rumors] about how all the conservative, Christian people that would vote for me hate Adam and never want him to win because of who he is. Oh, it was so frustrating—really bad, because we are really good friends. Why can't everyone get along? It never made any sense for me to judge anyone, who they are. It frustrates me that people can't get along with people because of their differences. And I'll tell you what, especially Christians. Christians have a hard time accepting people like Adam—liberal, from L.A., looks different, maybe acts a certain way. He's a great, great guy. They don't even give him a chance. And it's frustrating because I come from that. A lot of my friends are not that way, which I appreciate, but a lot of people in Arkansas or in the South or wherever are that way. We really hope that our relationship can be an inspiration to people. I could go on about that forever.
